"Bringing Care Home": October is Community Support Month!

October is the time to celebrate our Community Support Programs across the province Attention: Assignment Editor, Health/Medical Editor, Lifestyle Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor TORONT, ON--(CCNMatthews - Oct. 3, 2005) - October is the time to celebrate our Community Support Programs across the province. The Ontario Community Support Association (OCSA) is proud to represent over 360 community support service agencies, and their dedicated staff and volunteers. Every day they deliver critical services to frail seniors, and persons with disabilities or debilitating chronic diseases and their families.

Community support agencies provide a broad basket of services such as attendant care, adult/Alzheimer day programs, Meals on Wheels, personal and home support, transportation to the hospital or doctor appointments and supportive housing programs. These services are integral to the continuity of care for people in a well-functioning health care system.

"Very often the best kind of health care is the care that is delivered in the community. [Investments in these services] ease pressure on our hospitals, allowing them to better provide the acute care services they are so good at providing, while ensuring that whenever possible Ontarians receive care where it will do them the most good - at home or closer to home," said Health & Long-term Care Minister George Smitherman.(1)

Community Support Month is a time to volunteer - to help your neighbours and build community. To hear more about how you can help, please go to OCSA's website at www.ocsa.on.ca and click on the interactive "Care Finder" on the home page for an agency in your area where you can volunteer.

The Ontario Community Support Association (OCSA) is a provincial body that represents 360 not-for-profit agencies with 25,000 well-trained professional staff and 100,000 volunteers. Every year 750,000 people of all ages across Ontario receive community support services. These important, cost-effective services prevent unnecessary hospitalizations, emergency room admissions and premature institutionalization.
