British Columbia Lottery Corporation: Western Canada Games to Come to Kamloops!

KAMLOOPS, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwire - March 16, 2009) - The "Tournament Capital of Canada" has added another gemstone to its crown. The City of Kamloops is officially announcing the kick off to its campaign of hosting the Western Canada Summer Games in August of 2011 (Aug 4-14).

The Host Organizing Society is also pleased to announce a funding agreement between itself and the Province of British Columbia and to recognize the contribution of BCLC who has come on board as the Games Presenting Sponsor.

The Western Canada Summer Games is dedicated to the development of excellence in sport by the four western provinces and three territories: British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Nunavut, Northwest Territories and the Yukon Territory. These Games are Western Canada's largest multi-sport competition for young athletes and are an integral part of Canada's Long Term Athlete Development Model.

"These games not only provide a great opportunity for B.C. athletes to compete against the best in the West here at home, they enable Kamloops to build on its legacy of excellence in sport hosting," said B.C. Minister of Healthy Living and Sport Mary Polak. "Congratulations to everyone involved. I am confident you'll put on a first class event."

The provincial/territorial governments have committed to supporting these Games since 1975 when the first Western Canada Summer Games was held in Regina to provide opportunities for Western Canadian athletes to further prepare for the 1976 Montreal Olympics.

"Kamloops is one of B.C.'s best sport tourism destinations," said MLA for Kamloops Claude Richmond. "There's a reason why it hosts more than 100 sporting events each year: great sports facilities, warm hospitality and the support of the entire community."

"The 2011 Western Canada Summer Games are a fantastic opportunity for young people to demonstrate exceptional athletic skills, health, and wellness," said Mike Graydon, BCLC CEO. "As Kamloops is home to BCLC's head office, we are pleased to be the Official Presenting Sponsor of the games, which will be taking place in Kamloops."

"The entire region will benefit from the significant economic impact of these games," said MLA for Kamloops-North Thompson Kevin Krueger. "We look forward to welcoming thousands of athletes, coaches, officials and spectators in 2011."

Kamloops 2011 Western Canada Summer Games President, Henry Pejril says, "We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Province of British Columbia through the Ministry of Healthy Living and Sport and our other major funding partner, the City of Kamloops. Mayor and council have provided financial assistance as well as the use of our exceptional facilities to support these Games."

He adds: "We are extremely fortunate to have BCLC continue to demonstrate its commitment to sport by taking a lead role as our official Presenting Sponsor. With this leadership, our sponsorship program is off to a great start."
