Brits Alerted to New Drink-Driving Legislation in France

KENT, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwire - July 26, 2012) - Three million Brits cross the English Channel into France every year. If they fail to carry a breathalyser inside their vehicle, they will be hit with a fine come November 1st.

Quote Me Today, one of Britain's most experienced insurance brokers, are raising awareness about the new legislation to help drivers prepare and avoid the unnecessary penalty. QuoteMeToday advocate any scheme that can suppress drink driving but is issuing advice for the innocent drivers, who could be caught unawares by the new law.

Currently, all French motorists must carry their own personal breathalyser onboard their vehicle. They are also required to store a warning triangle and a fluorescent safety vest in the boot. British drivers passing through French borders without the necessary equipment will be treated with more leniency until November 1st, when the law applies to everybody on French roads.

Still, Quote Me Today are warning drivers early as the breathalysers are in short supply - there are just two manufacturers in France at present. Disposable kits can be ordered for as little as £2 each and reusable devices are currently priced around the £50 mark. Quote Me Today have advised drivers choosing the former to at least invest in a couple, as the French police will not excuse roadsters for carrying an inoperable breathalyser.

A spokesperson for Quote Me Today commented:

'This fine is easily avoidable for responsible drivers. If you are travelling to France this summer, then the best thing to do is order your breathalysers now - before the demand outweighs the supply. Even if you are caught during the grace period up until November, you could still go through a lot of hassle with the police.

'Also, make sure your sat-nav can deactivate its speed camera warnings because using a traffic camera detector can land you a fine for over £1000. Take the time to cover your back and enjoy the road trip worry-free.'

While in France, British drivers must display GB license plates on their vehicle and ensure their headlights are adjusted for driving on the right side of the road.

Quote Me Today are the experts when it comes to anything related to the motor industry. Looking out for drivers in general, beyond insurance, is what justifies the firm's authoritative standpoint in the insurance sector.
