BroadHop Survey: Emerging Policy Management Environment Demands New Capabilities

Findings Indicate High Interest in Subscriber-Based Policy Control, Ability to Trigger Billing & Charging Actions and Flexibility to Address Innovative Use Cases

DENVER, CO--(Marketwire - December 14, 2010) - BroadHop Inc., the network intelligence experts for service providers, today announced the results from a recent survey it conducted in conjunction with Heavy Reading, a leading telecom market research services company, of approximately 100 telecom industry experts and executives regarding the emerging policy environment and the platform capabilities they view as most important.

Asked to select up to three equally weighted responses -- over 61% of respondents felt applying policies at the level of the individual subscriber was the greatest priority, while 52% felt the option to apply trigger billing and charging actions was critical. 47% indicated that next gen policy management platforms need to be flexible enough to deploy not only a fixed set of target use cases but also those not yet defined. 22% noted the ability to apply policies in different types of networks and 15% named the capability for policies to be deployed by non-network specialists (e.g. product marketing) as an important capability.

"The results of this survey clearly indicate that service providers are looking to the policy management community to deliver new enabling capabilities beyond bandwidth or congestion management and fair use," said Dan Geiger, vice president of Marketing, BroadHop Inc. "Progressive service providers looking to capture new market share and retain subscribers are increasingly demanding more from their policy management vendors."

"Policy platforms are used not just to control cost per subscriber, but also to increase ARPU and -- even more importantly -- increase loyalty," said Graham Finnie, Chief Analyst, Heavy Reading. "To allow this to happen, requires the right kind of platform -- a platform that can handle far more policies and transactions, makes it easy to add new policy conditions, and is well-intregrated with charging systems and subscriber profile information. Ensuring that any chosen platform is capable of coping with the emerging policy environment must be the first task of every network operator."
