Brookline, MA Launches Chip-Based Smart Debit Card Program With 25 Merchants, Free $5 Gift and Discounts for Consumers

Local Currency With Merchant Loyalty Programs, Easy Parking, and Protection From Identity Theft to Boost Economy

HAMPTON FALLS, NH--(Marketwire - October 7, 2010) -  The town of Brookline, MA today announced the launch of its chip-based, secure smart debit card program, along with an on- and off-street parking application. The Town of Brookline Debit Card program is designed to create a safe, local currency that boosts consumer spending in Brookline.

With one swipe of the PXT Payments smart debit card, Brookline residents no longer need to worry if they have enough change to park, or be concerned about potential identity theft when making payments anywhere in Brookline. From coffee houses to hardware stores, consumers can load their chip-based, encrypted card at any participating merchant.

Merchants on board for phase one of the program's launch include: Athan's Bakery, Beauty and Style, Pita Pit, Brookline Booksmith, Brookline Wine and Gourmet, Cafe Fixe, The Clay Room, Connelly Hardware, Dorado Tacos & Cemitas, Eureka, The Eye Store, FASTFRAME, J Earley's Hair Salon, Johnnie's Fresh Market, The Meat House, Party Favors, Serenade Chocolatier, Tatte Fine Cookies and Cakes, Temptations Cafe, When Pigs Fly Bread, and Zia Clothing and Accessories. Town officials expect this number to increase quickly.

"If there's anything that will bring customers into the store and make them have a good experience we're all for it," said Dana Brigham, manager and co-owner of independently owned Brookline Booksmith, which has been in the community for 50 years. "If people can get parking easily, and come in with the same card to shop, I think it will enhance their experience."

To celebrate the launch, if consumers load $50 or more at participating merchants, they will receive an additional $5 loaded for free. That offer is good until Nov. 7, 2010. To purchase the card to begin with, just click on "buy card" on the website.

"We are thrilled to help both local merchants and residents of Brookline stay local for all of their shopping needs," said Marge Amster, commercial areas coordinator for the town of Brookline. "It doesn't do anyone any good if local citizens are driving out to suburban malls just because it's easy to park and there are discounts available. We've matched that now."

Surrounded by Boston on three sides, and Newton on the other, Brookline is a town with a highly desirable school district, universities, and its share of turnover, which means merchants must find ways to compete. Boston, Newton, and Wellesley officials are watching this launch with great interest, examining the effects of parking convenience and local economic development strategy. In nearby Portland, ME, town officials are in the final budgeting process to adopt a PXT-run smart debit card program.

"We are happy to participate in the synergetic relationship between parking, merchants, consumers, and the economic health of Brookline," said John Regan, CEO of PXT. "The PXT transaction process is secure with end to end encryption, and economically more efficient for the town and merchants than other electronic payment products."

The PXT smart debit card program can be made for exclusive use in a single town, city, or Business Improvement District (BID), or standardized across a state, or even multiple states if local authorities coordinate. The cards are also a safe currency consumers can trust. Using chips instead of magnetic stripes enables end-to-end encryption, making identity theft impossible.
