Bruce Power Alberta Narrows Focus to Whitemud Site

PEACE RIVER, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - March 23, 2009) - Bruce Power Alberta announced today it has selected the Whitemud site approximately 30 km north of Peace River as the preferred option for a potential nuclear power plant in Alberta.

Following a detailed technical review over the last six months, the Whitemud site scored higher than another parcel of land adjacent to Lac Cardinal in an analysis of 41 site evaluation criteria, including proximity to the Peace River, although both locations were deemed viable options.

"When we came to the Peace Country, we told people this was going to be a long decision-making process and we would consider a range of options," said Duncan Hawthorne, Bruce Power Alberta's President and Chief Executive Officer. "We feel both locations have merit, but it's clear to us the Whitemud location is better positioned to help us take the next steps in the process to introduce nuclear energy to Alberta."

Bruce Power Alberta will gather further baseline data on the technical, environmental and social aspects of the Whitemud site and advance the planning and consultation process while awaiting the report of an expert panel appointed by the provincial government looking at nuclear energy and the role it could play in Alberta.

Following this detailed site analysis and pending a favourable panel report, Bruce Power Alberta would be in a position to launch a formal Environmental Assessment (EA) in 2010. A successful EA would be a key piece of the decision-making process for Bruce Power Alberta as it considers new nuclear generation for Alberta.

Anyone interested in learning more about our initiative is invited to attend one of four Community Information sessions to be held this week, beginning this evening in Manning at the Battle River Agricultural Hall at 5 p.m. Other sessions will be held March 24 at the Elks Hall in Grimshaw, March 25 at the Dunvegan Inn in Fairview and March 26 at the Sawridge Inn in Peace River.
