BSN-JOBST $100,000 Research Grant Awarded at American Venous Forum Annual Meeting

CHARLOTTE, NC--(Marketwired - Feb 29, 2016) - BSN medical, the global integrated medical therapy provider, announced today that Maxim E. Shaydakov, M.D., Ph.D., research fellow at the Jobst Vascular Institute of ProMedica, and the Jobst Research Laboratory at the University of Michigan, is the 2016 recipient of the BSN-JOBST Research Grant in Venous and Lymphatic Diseases. The $100,000 research grant was awarded to Dr. Shaydakov at the American Venous Forum's (AVF) 28th Annual Meeting in Orlando, Fla.

For the past 20 years, BSN medical has contributed to vein disease research through the BSN-JOBST Research Grant, which was increased from $50,000 to $100,000 in 2015, bringing the company's total contribution to over $1 Million.

"The prestigious BSN-JOBST Research Grant enables important research to be performed to advance the understanding and treatment of vein disease throughout the U.S.," said Fedor Lurie, M.D., president of the AVF Foundation (AVFF). "Numerous investigators have benefited from this tremendous opportunity for 20 years now, for which the AVF Foundation is extremely appreciative of BSN medical's generosity and commitment to independent vein disease research."

Dr. Shaydakov will investigate functional heterogeneity of human venous valve endothelium and its role in deep vein thrombosis (DVT) disease under the mentorship of Jose A. Diaz, M.D., research assistant professor, vascular surgery, at the University of Michigan.

"The research grant recipients are leading the way in medical research efforts to better understand venous and lymphatic diseases," said Felix Dahm, M.D., executive vice president of Innovation and Strategic Development for BSN medical. "This important grant underscores our commitment to medical science, allowing us to provide a broadened range of medically relevant, therapeutic solutions across a variety of conditions that directly improve the lives of patients. The independent scientific data collected over the past two decades by grant recipients allows the medical community to gain access to substantial knowledge in vein disease research as well."

In 1995, BSN medical, in association with the AVF, initiated the BSN-JOBST Research Grant to further Conrad Jobst's legacy of innovation. The Fellowship, which has helped to jump-start the careers of young investigators, is designed to provide a foundation of research to build on future work and grants for mentored and independent research. Recipients are asked to submit a one-year update and present a progress report to the AVF membership at its Annual Meeting.

The selection for the recipient of the BSN-JOBST Research Grant is performed through a competitive peer review process. The competition is open to residents, fellows in a vascular training program, as well as physicians who have completed their training within the past five years.
