Budget Recognizes Need For Training Skilled Workers

Construction Industry Must Get Its Fair Share

Attention: Assignment Editor, Business/Financial Editor, News Editor, Government/Political Affairs Editor TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 26, 2008) - The Provincial Building and Construction Trades Council of Ontario expressed its support for the 2008 Ontario Budget because it addresses some of the needs of Ontario's most vulnerable people while still providing a focus on training skilled workers.

"All sectors of the economy are dependent on a highly skilled and efficient construction workforce," said Patrick Dillon, Business Manager and Secretary-Treasurer of the Provincial Building and Construction Trades Council of Ontario. "If we can't supply a highly skilled construction workforce, investors won't look to build in Ontario."

Demographic analysis shows that the aging construction workforce will require attracting greater numbers to the construction trades as the current crop of trades people approach retirement age. Compounding the retirement concerns, the Ontario Government has undertaken an ambitious infrastructure renewal program and announced plans to build unspecified new nuclear reactors. In addition, many construction trades people are poached by the industrial and service sectors. This combination of factors could lead to a strain in the human resource supply for the construction sector.

"Through the national Construction Sector Council's Labour Market Information System, we have taken steps to determine what our future skills training needs will be," said Dillon. "We now must ensure that we have the skills training infrastructure in place to produce the skilled trades people who can meet the demands of Ontario's economy. The construction industry must get a sufficient share of this new money dedicated to training that was announced in yesterday's budget to meet all of its human resource demands."

The Provincial Building and Construction Trades Council of Ontario is an umbrella organization that represents construction workers.
