Bull Joins Blade.org

Industry Consortium Extends Blade Server Collaboration Across European IT Community

PISCATAWAY, NJ--(Marketwire - February 21, 2008) - Blade.org, the industry consortium driving innovation in blade-based solutions, announced that Bull, a leading European provider of open, flexible and secure information systems, has joined Blade.org. Bull will add its hardware expertise in blade server solutions to help Blade.org members leverage their presence in the European market. Other European members of Blade.org include Zeus Technology, which brings to Blade.org its expertise in application traffic management for blade servers.

"We are pleased that Bull has joined our influential and growing community that is driving innovation and collaboration for blade technology," said Doug Balog, chairman of Blade.org and vice president of development for blades and modular systems at IBM. "European leaders such as Bull and Zeus Technology expand Blade.org's worldwide presence and enrich our members with a European perspective on the blade server market, including trends, technologies and solutions."

According to IDC, blade servers are expected to account for 35 percent of all servers sold in Western Europe by 2011, with a compound annual growth rate of 32.7 percent.* Blade.org vendor and end-user members are in the mainstream of this blade movement. Recent milestones for European Blade.org members include:

-- As part of its initiative to increase the efficiency of data center
infrastructures, and to create a new class of optimized, energy-conscious
"Bio Data Centers," Bull recently launched a new, flexible dimension to its
Escala Blade servers range, and announced the availability of the latest
version of the IBM AIX® operating system, AIX 6, on Escala blades. Bull
also announced the capability of mixing x86 and POWER-based blade servers
in the same Bull blade chassis. Bull is currently investing in the
development of new x86 blade servers based on the IBM BladeCenter
specification and will be promoting Blade.org activities in Europe,
recruiting new members, holding meetings and enlarging the activities of
    the community.

-- A recent benchmark of Zeus Technology's ZXTM load balancing and
traffic management software running on IBM BladeCenter confirmed that it
performed as efficiently on blades as on conventional hardware, and that
performance scaled linearly as additional blades were added to the ZXTM
    cluster.

-- Other European Blade.org members include Anders & Rodewyk, Hammer,
Nallatech and VirtenSys as well as many worldwide companies that have a
    strong presence in Europe.

"With the fast pace of the blade industry's innovations, Blade.org is an invaluable resource to keep updated with hot issues of the blade ecosystem," said Christophe Loye, marketing director for enterprise servers of Bull. "We look forward to leveraging the expertise of the Blade.org member community to help develop new blade technology and achieve broader acceptance for our solutions across diverse markets."

"Zeus Technology's ZXTM is the only Layer 4-7 load balancing and traffic management product available as software for blade servers," said Paul Brennan, chairman of Zeus Technology. "Through Blade.org we intend to educate resellers of blades and virtualization offerings that they can offer a packaged solution to their customers rather than having an additional hardware appliance for load balancing or traffic management."
