Bull Smoke Electronic Cigarettes Profiled in New York Conference

Science and technology writer Raj Dave had a chance to interview company founder and President Martin Giles in a unique Q&A session at AdTech in New York last week.

Q: What is your inspiration behind the brand?

A: We wanted to bring Western back. I think that everybody is trying to get too cute and fancy with new products. Being Westerners ourselves, we take a 'no bull' approach to life. We tell it like it is. This is how we came up with our now famous slogan, 'More Vapor. No Bull.' It is short and simple. Bull Smoke delivers more vapor than any other electronic cigarette brand that we have had the opportunity to test.

Q: Can you explain your current product offerings?

A: Sure, Raj. We currently offer two different starter kits. Our top seller is the Ranch Hand, which is designed for the serious smoker. It comes with all tobacco flavored cartridges of different strengths. Basically it is like a sample pack of our three different tobacco flavors and different strengths of nicotine. The City Slicker contains the same accessories as the Ranch Hand but instead of only containing tobacco flavored cartridges, it includes one of each of our ten marquee flavors in 16 mg nicotine strength. With the purchase of either kit, we include a free five pack of cartridges.

Q: You recently lowered the price of your starter kits to $59. Can you comment on the reasoning behind this aggressive move?

A: We just want to get this product out there in as many hands as possible. At $59, this represents an unprecedented value for the consumer. Sort of like the video game console makers, Sony and Microsoft come to mind, we will make our money on the back end. That is, the cartridges are the profitable product segment and customers seem to love what we offer in terms of taste and variety. Our internal testing and market research has shown that once we put a starter kit in a customer's hands that they become very loyal to the brand. Really what we are building here is a social community of people who choose to vape rather than traditionally smoke cigarettes. It is also worth mentioning that even at $59, there are discounts to be found on some leading electronic cigarette blogs and coupon code websites where customers can save an additional $10 on every kit. An example of this is the popular and currently active TENDOLLARS coupon code that customers can use to reduce the price of the kit even further all the way to $49. Also, we have a very popular rewards point program where customers receive the equivalent of 10% of their purchases in the form of reward points that can be redeemed on their next purchase. Q: You mentioned the social aspect of a 'community of vapers.' Can you provide anymore insight into that end of the business?

A: Well Raj, social media is very important to any business right now, particularly ones that operate online. We maintain a very popular Facebook fan page and we keep it updated with current industry and our own company events. Vaping has sort of become a sub-culture. Especially as we move into the colder winter months throughout the country, people are looking for something that they can enjoy inside and not have to freeze to death huddled up outside doorways like their traditional tobacco smoking counterparts. With this sense of camaraderie comes a sense of social belonging. I cannot think of a better social conversation piece in 2011 than the electronic cigarette. Q: Final question here, Martin. Can we expect anything new from Bull Smoke in 2012?

A: 2012 is going to be a very exciting year for Bull Smoke. We have a number of planned product launches, including a personal charging case which we expect to be launched early in the first quarter. Also, we are pioneering a new manual battery with a revolutionary trigger button that delivers an unprecedented amount of vapor per inhale. The whole team is very excited about this product. Finally, we are introducing a smaller battery. Packing the same charge as the original Bull Smoke battery, this new micro battery will be about the same size as a traditional king size cigarette, once the cartridge is added on. Most importantly, it will pack the same power per inhale that Bull Smoke customers have become accustomed to. As you can see, we will have something for everybody in 2012.
