Bullfrog Power Partners With Nova Scotia's River John School and Community HUB

HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA--(Marketwired - May 29, 2015) - Bullfrog Power®, Canada's leading green energy provider, is working with the River John Support Our School committee on their proposal to transform the River John Consolidated School, located in Nova Scotia's Pictou County, into a community HUB. Through the partnership, Bullfrog Power is committing financial resources to install a solar project as part of the planned River John School and Community HUB project.

"The proposed solar installation is an important component of how the River John School and Community HUB will demonstrate the future sustainability of the school and our community," said Sheree Fitch, a member of the River John Support Our School committee. "Bullfrog Power's participation is an example of the innovative partnerships we are creating to help make the River John School and Community HUB a success."

The power generated by the River John solar installation will be sold back to the grid, generating revenue needed to make the Community HUB financially viable. The proposed School and Community HUB is a plan to both save the existing River John school and expand its role in the community by drawing in residents and visitors alike with programs and special events. The proposed project will feature:

  • The Scholar Ship Centre, a repurposing of the library to create a makerspace that emphasizes experiential learning while drawing on the community's fisheries industry and its shipbuilding past;
  • The Wide Awake Art Gallery and Cafe, which will showcase artists and artisans of the North Shore and Pictou County;
  • The Community HUB Garden; and
  • An Outdoor Community Recreation HUB.

"Bullfrog Power works with communities across Canada, supporting unique projects and initiatives that incorporate renewable energy as part of sustainable and smart development plans," said Ron Seftel, COO, Bullfrog Power. "The River John project is particularly encouraging because it demonstrates how green energy solutions can be a part of any enterprising community's plans."

In recent weeks, the project has garnered more attention from outside the community. The school's most famous proponent has been award-winning Canadian novelist Margaret Atwood who wrote a letter to the Chignecto-Central regional school board in favour of keeping the Pictou County school open.

The River John Support Our School committee's project - including the proposed solar installation from Bullfrog Power - is presently under review, with a decision expected on June 10, 2015.
