Bullying is Not an Option for Canadian Youth

Pizza Pizza teams up with parenting expert Dr. Karyn Gordon to bring that message to Ontario students during Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Nov. 13, 2014) - "Friendships unplugged" is the theme of the interactive presentation renowned parenting and relationships expert Dr. Karyn Gordon will deliver to Ontario students in five schools during National Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week, taking place November 16-22. This is the second consecutive year of her tour, which is in partnership with Pizza Pizza.

Dr. Gordon will visit five schools in the province over three days to deliver the interactive talk directed toward students in Grades 1-8. Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week is part of an integrated campaign by the Ontario Ministry of Education to help promote safe schools and a positive learning environment through a broad discourse on bullying.

"This is a very important subject for the most vulnerable people in our society, our children," said Pat Finelli, Chief Marketing Officer at Pizza Pizza. "They represent our future and bullying is not only an attack on individuals, but it compromises our future as a society. Our company is dedicated to working with Dr. Gordon to promote healthy relationships for our young ones and we are proud to be able to help her share her anti-bullying message with our youth, school authorities and parents."

Students attending her presentations will learn strategies to build healthy friendships and deal with conflict effectively. Dr. Gordon begins the workshop with a two-minute video, revealing what celebrities have to say about friendships. She then turns the assembly into a popular mock "talk-show" format, selecting four volunteers from the audience (decided by teachers in advance) to portray four friends. The short but powerful skit helps students to identify with one of the different characters.

Among the lessons are:

  • How self-esteem is reflected in the way friends treat each other
  • What genuine respect truly looks like
  • What bullying says about a person's self-esteem
  • How to communicate effectively and respectfully during conflict
  • Clues to finding a great friend
  • Three practical ways to build healthy friendship

Dr. Gordon's scheduled school visits, include the following institutions:

Date School City
November 17 Diefenbaker Elementary School East York
November 17 Branksome Hall Toronto
November 18 St. Josephine Bakhita Catholic Elementary School Ajax
November 19 Immaculate Conception Catholic Elementary School Ancaster
November 19 Ealing Public School London

*please note these events are not open to the public, media must RSVP their presence via PR contacts listed below.

"Bullying has become a prominent issue among our youth around the world," said Dr. Gordon. "It is a major shortfall in behavior for many young persons who don't know how to comfort themselves any better or have no idea how to make friends. Like anything else, they need to be taught."

The Canadian Institute of Health Research states that at least one in three adolescent students in Canada have reported being bullied, and 47 per cent of Canadian parents report having a child who is a victim of bullying.
