Buncombe County Backhauls Emergency Responder Network With Exalt

Licensed Exalt Systems Mitigate Interference, Deliver Higher Performance, and Support Native TDM and Native Ethernet

CAMPBELL, CA--(Marketwired - Aug 19, 2013) - Exalt Communications, Inc., the leading innovator of next-generation packet microwave backhaul systems, today announced that Buncombe County, NC has upgraded its unlicensed microwave network with high performance licensed Exalt microwave systems. The new microwave network was easy to deploy and provides radio service for sheriff, fire, and emergency medical services (EMS) within the 660 square mile county, increasing network performance and eliminating radio interference that plagued the previous microwave system.

Buncombe County is located in Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina in the area surrounding Asheville. The primary challenge with its initial unlicensed microwave system was interference: since the antennas are deployed several thousand feet above sea level, they were receiving interference from sources across the southeastern United States. By choosing Exalt EX-s split-mount 11 GHz and 23 GHz microwave systems, the county was able to eliminate interference and easily deploy a high-performance network for its emergency services.

"We chose Exalt from among several vendors because we knew from past experience that their systems are highly reliable, support native Ethernet and native TDM, and are easy to install and manage," said Clint Gorman, Public Safety Communications Systems Administrator at Buncombe County. "The licensed Exalt systems ended our interference problems, increased our network performance substantially and, because they are easy to use, enabled us to deploy and maintain them ourselves."

Buncombe County has installed 30 links of Exalt microwave systems, extending its network across the county and serving public safety agencies in a dozen communities in addition to Asheville, the county seat. The network delivers both T1 and Ethernet services with throughput of up to 300 megabits per second.

"First-responder networks across the country rely on Exalt systems for mission-critical communications," said Joe Schraml, Exalt vice president of product line management. "Our extensive portfolio of microwave systems enables counties like Buncombe County to choose exactly the systems they need, while our easy-to-use interfaces make it possible for IT-focused personnel to deploy and maintain the systems to deliver reliable, high-performance Ethernet and T1 services."
