Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs Secretary Butler to Speak on US-Iraq Relations

LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire - April 15, 2008) - Ambassador Lawrence E. Butler will speak with TOWN Hall Los Angeles on Tuesday, April 29, 2008, at the Regency Club. He will deliver his address "US Policy Toward Iraq: An Economic and Regional Perspective." Angelenos will have the opportunity to ask Butler about current obstacles and the future of the US in Iraq.

On ending corruption in the Middle East, Butler said, "We pursue these efforts across the country, and not just in Baghdad. At the grass-roots level, for example, the Department of State funds a number of non-governmental organizations that target corruption and are seeking to create a civil society where government transactions are transparent and subject to the rule of law."

Butler joined the US Service in 1976. He has served on the National Security Council staff as Director for European Affairs, the Principal Deputy High Representative to Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the US Ambassador to the Republic of Macedonia. In these positions, Butler successfully implemented peace agreements in Macedonia, Northern Ireland, and Bosnia.

He assumed the position of Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs in January 2007. He is responsible for overseeing US policy creation and implementation efforts in Iraq, as well as staffing, financing, and management issues related to the Department's presence in Iraq.

Throughout its 70-year history, TOWN HALL has hosted discussions with ambassadors and foreign heads of state. In 2006, former UN Weapons Inspector for Iraq, Scott Ritter, spoke with TOWN HALL and His Royal Highness Prince Turki Al-Faisal, former Saudi Arabia Ambassador to the US, delivered an address on US-Saudi relations.
