Burnaby Physiotherapy Clinic's Article on Texting Thumb Featured in Burnaby Now

BURNABY, BC--(Marketwired - April 21, 2016) - Absolute PhysioCare & Sports Rehab, a physiotherapy clinic in Burnaby, is absolutely thrilled to be sharing their story with local newspaper Burnaby Now. Their article on texting thumb, which originally appeared on the company website, has been picked up by the popular community newspaper. To see the original story, go to:

Texting thumb, also known as De Quervain's Tenosynovitis, is an overuse condition most popularly associated with women, who make up almost 80% of the cases. As the name suggests, this condition, linked to the overuse of cellphones and mobile games, has exploded in the cellular age.

As the owner of Absolute PhysioCare & Sports Rehab, Shaila Jiwa felt obliged to write the blog as she noticed more and more people coming into the clinic complaining about serious, often debilitating pain in their thumbs.

"We don't see them in the early stages," Shaila told Burnaby Now. "We see them in the later stages because then it becomes a functional limitation for them. They can't hold their cup of coffee, it's hurting so much. They can't brush their teeth; they have to use their other hand."

Shaila contributes the increase due to new larger phones but also says that's not the only reason as other things can also contribute to this condition, saying that these larger devices are putting more strain on the thumb due to texting and reaching to the opposite end of the screen. The other problem is because smart phones are so versatile, people are using them for work that would otherwise have been done on laptops or computers.

Although texting thumb can be tough to treat, Shaila has recommended a helpful exercise that is detailed both in her corporate blog and in the newspaper article. However, if the pain persists, it's important to make an appointment with a licensed physiotherapist, chiropractor or massage therapist as soon as possible.

"Our blog on texting thumb is getting a lot attention due to the prevalence of cases. Until people understand what causes it, and alter their habits accordingly, it's likely this trend will continue. It's a very relevant topic, and people want to know more about it," says Shaila, who adds that she's also been contacted by CTV and BCIT broadcasting.
