Burns & McDonnell Is Recognized as the 14th Best Workplace for Millennials in the U.S.

High Employee Rankings for Great Pride, Atmosphere and Bosses Land the Firm Near the Top of the Inaugural List From Great Place to Work(R) and Fortune

KANSAS CITY, MO--(Marketwired - Jun 23, 2015) -  After surveying nearly 90,000 millennials, Great Place to Work® and Fortune magazine have recognized Burns & McDonnell as one of the 100 Best Workplaces For Millennials in the country. In its inaugural list, the firm earned the number 14 spot on the list with employees giving Burns & McDonnell a 96 percent ranking or above for great challenges, atmosphere, rewards, pride, communication and bosses. The rankings are based on anonymous surveys from randomly selected employees that included candid feedback, such as:

  • "This company nurtures an ethos that reveres ethical thinking, promotes honorable behavior, inspires loyalty, treasures the contributions of individuals and protects the well-being and safety of employees, customers and contractors alike. It is a company that, without any cliché, I am proud and grateful to be part of."
  • "By operating a cafeteria with healthy food options, a fitness center where I can take yoga and Pilate's classes, and a health center where I can get my annual physical and lab work done, proves Burns & McDonnell cares about and invests in their employees' health and well-being."
  • "We celebrate a lot here. Every time there's something to celebrate, it seems like we don't miss an opportunity to do so."

According to the Pew Research Center analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data, millennials are now the largest workforce in America. In fact, in just 10 years, millennials are expected to make up 75 percent of the workforce. The survey shows 45 percent of employees at Burns & McDonnell are Millennials.

"Millennials tell us that they love the fact that we are a 100 percent employee-owned company. The moment an employee comes on board, they are treated as an owner of the company," says Greg Graves, Chairman and CEO, Burns & McDonnell. "We are passionate about our entrepreneurial culture and making Burns & McDonnell the best place to work for all of our employees."

Many millennials are introduced to Burns & McDonnell through its robust internship program. Each year, it attracts more than 200 college students across the country.

"Our internships serve as an engaging interview process," says Graves. "They don't file and deliver mail at Burns & McDonnell. We provide them with challenging projects and introduce them to our different lines of business, as well as our culture. That's why so many of them soon return as employee-owners and have long and rewarding careers with us."

Burns & McDonnell and the 99 other winning companies were selected based on the evaluations of millennial-aged employees who were surveyed using the Trust Index©, Great Place to Work's employee assessment survey. The 100 Best Workplaces for Millennials is part of a series of rankings by Great Place to Work® and Fortune based entirely on employee surveys from published Great Place to Work® Reviews. Past lists have included Technology, Retail, Financial Services, Advertising and Manufacturing.

"Companies focused on solid growth understand that it's critical for senior leaders to have an in-depth understanding of all their employees' experiences, regardless of their age, role in the organization, or any other demographic profile," says Michael Bush, CEO of Great Place to Work® United States. "Great workplaces are constantly monitoring and analyzing their employees' workplace experiences and then taking action to improve them. Ranking on this list is a great indicator that these companies' efforts to create great workplaces are resonating with millennials."

Within the past year, Burns & McDonnell reached several historic milestones. The firm achieved a record $2.5 billion in sales, opened an international division, hired its 5,000th employee, and broke ground on what will ultimately be a 450,000 square foot expansion of the firm's World Headquarters in Kansas City that will accommodate 2,100 employee-owners when it opens in the spring of 2016.

Earlier this year, Fortune also ranked Burns & McDonnell 15 on the 2015 Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For® List. This is the fifth year the firm has received this prestigious recognition.
