Burns & McDonnell Ranks 6th on Latest MEP Giants Survey

Firm Posts 30 Percent Growth in Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing and Fire Protection Engineering Services

KANSAS CITY, MO--(Marketwired - Oct 13, 2014) - Burns & McDonnell has moved up two places to number six on the 2014 MEP Giants ranking of top mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection engineering firms by Consulting-Specifying Engineer (CSE) magazine.

Revenue generated by Burns & McDonnell divisions providing mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection engineering services totaled $141.4 million for the 2014 MEP Giants ranking. That amount was up 30 percent over MEP revenue reported in the 2013 survey when Burns & McDonnell ranked number eight.

A key contributor to that growth is an expanding national commissioning practice group specializing in delivering a wide range of commissioning, retro-commissioning and monitoring-based commissioning services to complex, critical facilities throughout the country. Burns & McDonnell has provided commissioning services for more than $16 billion in new construction in the past five years. In addition, the firm has provided retro-commissioning and related services for more than 27 million square feet of existing building space during the same time period. The group has more than 100 commissioning professionals available, including 17 Certified Cx Authorities located in strategic regions around the country, enabling the firm to provide national expertise on a local basis.

Additionally, Burns & McDonnell has a growing fire protection specialty providing comprehensive solutions for life safety and asset protection in facilities nationwide. Based in Minneapolis-St. Paul but with experts located around the country, the fire protection practice specializes in designing cost-effective solutions to lower capital and life-of-the-building costs.

"We've seen significant growth because facility owners and developers are increasingly finding that commissioning is a prudent step to ensure that equipment, materials and systems are installed properly and operating as efficiently as designed," said Brian Lindstrom, director of national commissioning services for Burns & McDonnell. "Commissioning and fire protection professionals are increasingly engaged early in the project design and construction cycles as a strategy to better manage project budgets and reduce project risk."

According to CSE, the 2014 MEP Giants generated approximately $39.5 billion in gross annual revenue industry-wide during the previous fiscal year and $6.38 billion in mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP), and fire protection engineering design revenue. The publication reports that this was essentially the same revenue as reported for the prior survey period.
