KANSAS CITY, MO--(Marketwired - Jun 15, 2015) - For the second consecutive year, Burns & McDonnell has achieved the Number 1 ranking in Electrical Construction & Maintenance (EC&M) magazine's annual ranking of Top 40 electrical design firms. Burns & McDonnell reported electrical design revenue of $617.4 million for 2014, up from $578.1 million in 2013.
Burns & McDonnell has seen steady growth in electrical design projects in recent years, mostly due to a surge in demand for new and upgraded high-voltage electrical transmission lines and substations throughout North America. The work is being driven by the need to upgrade aging power infrastructure in many areas of the country and the addition of new renewable power sources on the grid. Engineering News-Record magazine currently ranks Burns & McDonnell as the Number 1 engineering design firm serving the electrical transmission and distribution industry worldwide.
According to EC&M, many of the Top 40 electrical design firms reported revenue gains year-over-year, though overall revenue of $1.68 billion was down slightly from the prior year. Like Burns & McDonnell, most of the largest firms reported opening new branch offices to establish a stronger presence in new geographic locations.
Earlier this year, Burns & McDonnell opened a new office in Orlando, Fla., in response to a need to better serve large electric utility clients in Florida. Another new office was opened in late 2014 in Pasadena, Calif., also primarily to serve large power clients in Southern California.
