Burns & McDonnell T&D Division Listed in Top Spot on Engineering News-Record 2014 Top Design Firms Ranking

KANSAS CITY, MO--(Marketwired - Sep 3, 2014) - Further development of a more robust national electric power grid has continued a trend of double-digit growth for Burns & McDonnell's Transmission & Distribution (T&D) division, resulting in a number one ranking in Engineering News-Record (ENR) magazine's annual listing of firms providing engineering design services in the T&D sector.

Burns & McDonnell reported annual T&D engineering revenue of $272.6 million, up 18 percent over 2013 revenue of $231.9 million. For the past five years, Burns & McDonnell has consistently ranked among the top three firms on the widely watched ENR ranking of industry leaders.

Burns & McDonnell is currently providing engineering design and construction management services for some of the largest electrical transmission, distribution and substation projects in North America. Burns & McDonnell and Burns & McDonnell-Canada now employ more than 1,000 engineers, technical specialists and construction managers. As a result of that activity, Burns & McDonnell also ranked as the largest firm on the Electrical Construction & Maintenance ranking of Top 10 firms providing electrical design services.

"We've been successful in part because we're seeing a large shift in project delivery toward engineer-procure-construct (EPC) and program management, which are our specialties," said John Olander, president of the T&D division. "EPC is becoming popular with our utility clients because they are facing major attrition among professional staff and often don't have the resources to manage mega-scale transmission projects like they may have in the past. EPC takes some of the risk burden off the client's shoulders while giving them more cost and schedule certainty."

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, U.S. power companies invested $14.1 billion in transmission infrastructure-related projects in 2012, continuing a sharp upward trend that began more than 10 years earlier. The investment has been triggered by the need to improve grid reliability, the addition of renewable power sources and population shifts toward western and southern regions of the country.
