Burton Group Report Predicts a New Wave of Growth in Identity Management

Industry Rally Cry to Shift From "Identity" to "Relation" -- A topic to Be Discussed In-Depth at Catalyst Conference

SALT LAKE CITY, UT -- (MARKET WIRE) -- May 10, 2006 -- The identity management (IdM) market will experience another, but different, wave of growth this year. According to a report from in-depth IT research firm Burton Group, the market will begin moving from product suites to inherent identity services -- a phase that will require redefinition of iconic notions of IdM. In the report "Identity and Privacy Trends in Enterprise IT: Overlapping Suites and Services," research director Mike Neuenschwander explains that existing IdM solutions approach identity as an after-market option of IT infrastructure. But to achieve the crucial requirements of connected enterprises, many IdM features must seep into the platforms, applications, and infrastructure that enterprises use in order to become inherent qualities of these systems -- especially as enterprises migrate to service-oriented architecture (SOA).

"Getting to inherency requires IT architects and software developers to explore non-traditional approaches to IdM," says Neuenschwander. "In distributed models, identity is just an important ingredient in establishing connections. But what's really needed is a simple, scalable, and cost-effective approach to enabling dynamic relationships. Whereas 'directory' was the rallying cry of the early IdM market and 'identity' is that of the market's current phase, 'relation' best describes the coming phase of the market."
