Business Destinations Looks at the Revival of India's Creaking Rail Network

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(Marketwired - June 1, 2015) - Plans to revamp India's crumbling rail network were greeted with relief nationwide when they were announced earlier this year, though with a degree of skepticism also. Soaring demand and years of neglect have inhibited the backbone of India's transport network, though the upgrades could hand the country's economy the boost it so desperately needs. Business Destinations asks whether the five-year, $137bn scheme will keep the country steaming ahead.

"The rickety old trains look like they need a massive upgrade, but they have nonetheless successfully served millions of users every year at the same time as providing a far more comfortable service than most business travellers would get in any other parts of the world," according to the Business Destinations report. However, the scale of the improvements is huge, and there is much to be done before India's rail network is restored to its former glory.

The Business Destinations report delves into how India's rail network was once the envy of the world, and asks whether the proposals could bring an end to a decades-long trend of underinvestment. If India's Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu is to be believed, the gains for the economy could be "immense", and could elevate poorer segments of society, while also creating new jobs.

According to the report: "Restoring this once-great network could be the catalyst that catapults India toward finally realising its economic potential."
