Butler Hybrid Building Offers the Best of Both Worlds

FALCONER, NY--(Marketwire - Aug 12, 2011) - Conventional buildings aren't for everyone. That's why Butler Manufacturing has introduced the innovative True Hybrid construction process, which integrates the strengths of the pre-engineered structure with the benefits of conventional construction processes.

Kessel Construction, a certified Butler Builder and one of the region's most respected design/build firms specializing in turnkey construction of commercial and industrial buildings, recently put the benefits of the hybrid building to work for Harley-Davidson of Jamestown!

When the 30-plus-year-old family business outgrew its current 15,000-square-foot facility, Vice President Brian Reid sat down with his daughter, who was a graphic design student at the time, to sketch their new dream building. After selecting Kessel Construction and Butler products and learning all about the advantages of a hybrid building, Harley-Davidson of Jamestown decided that this was exactly the avenue that offered the flexibility necessary to bring their visionary new building to life.

"We didn't want a cookie-cutter building. We wanted something different," Reid said. "We knew we could come up with a look that would be unique, something people would see and say, 'wow you need to check out that building!' We shared our sketches with the designer and got exactly what we wanted."

The breathtakingly unique 36,000-square-foot facility utilizes Butler's Widespan™ structural system, which combines the practicality of a rigid frame with almost unlimited design flexibility and maximum use of the interior space. A combination of the CMR-24® and VSR™ systems were selected to provide weather-tight durability while offering design flexibility to achieve an aesthetically pleasing result. Butler's Shadowall™ was combined with split face block and stucco to create an energy-efficient structure and a visually stunning exterior. For added energy savings, six inches of Thermax Rigid Insulation was included in the wall and three additional inches were incorporated in the roof construction.

Reid played an active role in the construction of his new facility. While some building owners prefer the hands-off approach, he enjoyed being involved in the daily operations. "I was on-site every day. It was my building and I wanted to participate in the process, but I didn't want to get in the way," Reid said. "They always made me feel welcome. I thoroughly enjoyed working with Kessel. Everyone was professional. If something needed taken care of, it was. Any hitches were handled and the building process went on. It made me proud to have Kessel as my construction company of choice."
