'Buy Bricks. Build A School' Glimmer of Hope Campaign Launched to Build Ethiopian Schools One Brick at a Time

3,000 Bricks Builds a School in a Country Where 40% of Children Never Attend School -- Gift Bricks and Give Back

AUSTIN, TX--(Marketwire - Dec 20, 2011) - This holiday season, give a gift that gives back. A Glimmer of Hope has launched its "Buy Bricks. Build A School" campaign to help build schools in rural Ethiopia, a country where 40% of kids never go to school.

Austin-based non-profit A Glimmer of Hope believes it can change the future of Ethiopian children one brick at a time -- providing kids with a chance at a better education and an opportunity to escape extreme poverty.

"The Glimmer of Hope motto is 'when you eliminate poverty, you illuminate lives' and that's exactly what we're doing with our 'Buy Bricks. Build A School' campaign. When you buy some bricks, you literally help build a school -- 750 bricks builds a classroom, 3,000 builds a school," said Brian Cooper, A Glimmer of Hope CEO. "Currently, 80% of women in rural Ethiopia can't read. Kids who live close enough to a classroom to attend school usually do so in the dark, with no clean drinking water or bathrooms. So, it isn't just a brick, it's a chance at a better education."

A Glimmer of Hope works to eliminate poverty in Ethiopia by building schools, water projects, health clinics and providing microfinance loans. 100% of all donations go to the organization's Ethiopian projects with zero going to operating expenses.

Why Glimmer Builds Schools

Today in Ethiopia, if kids even have a school nearby, it's often a crumbling mud or stick building. Children often sit on dirt floors or rocks while a broken blackboard may be the only hint that these falling-down structures are schools. Inside, dark, unlit classrooms challenge kids to learn and read. No toilet facilities exist. Untreated water provides the only drinking option. Read more about why we build schools.

Glimmer schools give these kids a chance. The schools provide clean water, operable bathrooms, desks, chairs and even new blackboards. The classrooms are lit and large enough to hold even more children. So far, Glimmer has built more than 335 schools.

Here are stories of children whose lives are being changed by new schools built by Glimmer, like Yorda who will not be dropping out of school to get married like her older sister but instead is going to the new Glimmer high school so she can become a doctor.

Why not help another child like Yorda? For the holidays, give gifts that count. Buy Bricks. Build a School.

Glimmer appreciates corporate sponsorship for this campaign by ProductionFor, Light the World Photographers, and Esther Havens.

A Glimmer of Hope helps lift women and children out of extreme poverty in rural Ethiopia. Our promise to our donors is that 100% of all donations given to Glimmer will go directly to the projects that we serve in Ethiopia. We are incredibly fortunate to have an endowment that covers all of our operating expenses. This allows us to use every donated dollar for development work. Since our founding in 2000, we have constructed more than 4,000 water projects, 335 school buildings and 170 health facilities, and distributed more than 17,000 micro-finance loans to help more than 2.5 million people living in rural Ethiopia.
