CA Institute Confers FCA Designation on Two Sudbury Chartered Accountants

Local duo among 75 Ontario-wide to receive profession's top honour

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 24, 2009) - The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario has announced the election of 75 Ontario Chartered Accountants as Fellows of the Institute, earning the designation FCA. That list includes Sudbury's Donald M. Garrioch, FCA, and Valorie M. Leonard, FCA.

The highest designation the Institute confers, Fellowship is awarded for outstanding career achievements as well as outstanding service to the community and the profession.

Within two years of becoming a CA in Toronto in 1984, Don Garrioch had returned to Sudbury and became a partner in a 60-person regional firm that, through mergers, ultimately became KPMG LLPs Sudbury office. Today, he is Business Unit Leader for Northern Ontario. Community service activities include a variety of senior voluntary roles with the Rotary Club of Sudbury Sunrisers, St. Joseph's Health Centre and St. Joseph's Villa, Shamrock Non-Profit Homes, St. Patrick's Parish, the Kinsmen Club of Sudbury and The Parish Assistance Fund of the Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie.

Valorie Leonard is a Full Professor in the Faculty of Management at Laurentian University, where she is Chair of the Accounting Department. Having achieved her own CA in 1981, she has done much over the years to guide young people into the profession and help them earn their own designation. Aside from her work at Laurentian, she has been very involved with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario, serving as Seminar Leader with the School of Accountancy every year since 1989 and acting as a facilitator and instructor at the Northern Ontario CKE Prep Program. She has also been actively involved in accounting educational material as both an author and reviewer for the ICAO and textbook publishers.

Ontario's Chartered Accountants work in public practice, industry, academe, government and the not-for-profit sector. About three per cent of CAs have earned the FCA designation. Fellowship elections are held every three years.

"Being elected an FCA by their peers is an indication of the esteem these CAs enjoy in their profession and communities," said Gerald Mills, FCA, Chair of the Institute. "It is also testimony to how much each has contributed to both the CA profession and their respective communities."
