CAA North & East Ontario is Helping Motorists Beat the Heat

Automotive Services Sees 25% Increase in Roadside Assistance Calls During Heat Wave

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - July 9, 2010) - With temperatures reaching record-breaking highs this week, employees at CAA North & East Ontario (CAANEO) are working harder than ever to help stranded motorists get back on the road as quickly and safely as possible.

This past week, CAANEO has received in excess of 2500 emergency roadside service calls, a 25% increase over the same time period last year. Responding to these calls is a team effort, with CAANEO operators making sure they find the exact location of the Members and getting them to a safe, cool place while they wait for assistance. CAANEO's Dispatchers manage the calls, and send them off to the fleet drivers, who are working tirelessly in sweltering heat to deliver first-class service to stranded motorists across North & East Ontario.

Here are some tips for avoiding car trouble during extremely hot weather:

  • Check your tire pressure, and inspect them regularly throughout your trip. If a tire is too hot to touch, remain stopped and allow time for it to cool off, as overheated tires can lead to blow-outs or fires.
  • Don't get left high and dry! Make sure you have enough engine oil and coolant before starting out. Engine oil keeps the engine cool and lubricated, so make sure to get your oil changed regularly.
  • When you're on the road, watch out for "bleeding tar". Tar in road pavement often rises to the surface in extremely hot weather; this can make the road surface very slippery, so exercise extra caution.
  • Slow down! High speeds produce more heat for the car's engine and tires.
  • Last but definitely not least, take care of yourself! Make sure to always have water with you, and take frequent breaks to ensure you and your passengers stay hydrated.

With these simple tips, you can beat the heat and stay safe on the roads this summer.
