Cabinet Shuffle in Quebec: The AFNQL Wishes to Resume Constructive Discussions on all the Priority Files

WENDAKE, QUEBEC--(Marketwire - Feb. 4, 2011) - The Assembly of First Nations of Quebec and Labrador (AFNQL) is saluting the intention behind the cabinet shuffle process that was announced yesterday by the Premier and hoping that the objective behind the changes within Affaires autochtones is to improve relations between the First Nations and the government. It is for this reason that Chief Picard is requesting a meeting as soon as possible with Mr. Kelley in order to review and update all of the files.

Premier Charest announced the reorganization of his cabinet yesterday in order to initiate the parliamentary session with what he referred to as "new blood". According to the Chief of the Assembly of First Nations of Quebec and Labrador, Ghislain Picard, this reorganization process is not overly impressive: "We are nonetheless pleasantly surprised regarding the nomination of Geoffrey Kelley as the Minister of Affaires autochtones."

Geoffrey Kelley was the Minister responsible for the Affaires autochtones from February 18, 2005, until April 18, 2007. One of Mr. Kelley's significant achievements in the framework of his term was the First Nations Socio-Economic Forum that was held in October 2006. "This was a very enriching experience for our communities. We hope to have the opportunity to repeat the experience at a different level in order to address issues such as the management of lands and resources in the framework of the Plan Nord" explained Chief Picard.
