CAC awards Amicus recognition at Ritrama

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(CCNMatthews - March 22, 2007) - The Central Arbitration Committee (CAC), the government body which adjudicates on union recognition, has declared that Amicus be recognised for collective bargaining rights at Ritrama (UK) in Eccles, Greater Manchester. The decision is binding on the company.

Amicus took its case to the CAC after Ritrama refused to negotiate a voluntary union recognition agreement with the union which claimed that it had over 50% of the workforce in union membership.

The CAC ruled that the company must recognise Amicus to represent its members for collective bargaining following a membership check that showed that over 60% of the workforce were union members, well over the 50%+1 required under legislation.

The company has 30 days in which to conclude a formal recognition agreement with the union.

At the CAC hearing the company argued that there should be a ballot vote of the workforce on the question of union recognition. Amicus argued that the holding of a ballot would not further the relationship at this stage, but that good industrial relations would come about as a result of the Union's officers negotiating with the company in the longer term. The CAC awarded recognition without a ballot.

Commenting on the CAC decision Amicus Assistant General Secretary Tony Burke said: "We are pleased with the CAC decision and I want thank our members at Ritrama who have waited three years get union rights. We hope that the company will now listen to its workforce and sit down with us a work towards building a relationship which will benefit the company and its employees."
