CAE Healthcare presented its childbirth simulator for the first time in Canada

MONTREAL, CANADA--(Marketwired - May 27, 2014) - CAE Healthcare presented today its new CAE Fidelis Maternal Fetal Simulator at the Centre intégré d'enseignement et de formation (CIEF) of the Centre hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal (CHUM), in Montreal. It is the first time that the simulator is presented to media in Canada.

A doctor and a nurse from CHUM's birthing centre demonstrated the use of the simulator which reproduces many aspects of labour and delivery: it breathes, talks, bleeds, simulates contractions and gives birth to a crying baby. They conducted a shoulder dystocia simulation, one of many other obstetric emergencies that can be simulated.

"We must not underestimate the importance of simulation in the training of healthcare professionals," said Dr. Marie-Josée Dupuis, Chief Learning Officer of the Grande École at the CHUM and obstetrician-gynecologist. "Simulated exercises allow the healthcare team to practice procedures that are important for patient safety and comfort. Though it may seem a paradox, simulation mannequins help to humanize care."

Based on widely accepted and validated models of maternal-fetal physiology, the childbirth simulator offers human-like vital signs and responses for practice of obstetrical emergencies and labour and delivery scenarios.

"Our birthing simulator is the most realistic and versatile childbirth simulator on the market today. We developed the CAE Fidelis Maternal Fetal Simulator to help healthcare professionals improve their training and patient outcomes," said Dr. Robert Amyot, President of CAE Healthcare. "The healthcare field is seeking advanced tools for inter-professional training that can prepare teams to manage emergencies requiring rapid response, technical skills, teamwork and communication."

The CAE Fidelis Maternal Fetal Simulator is a medical robot with pupils that dilate or constrict, measurable vital signs, a blood reservoir to simulate post-partum hemorrhage, and a birthing process with the delivery of a fetus through the birthing canal. The mother has palpable soft skin, simulated uterine contractions as well as leg and hip articulations for practice of childbirth positioning and manoeuvres. The fetal vital signs respond to labour and delivery treatments and manoeuvres, and the simulator produces APGAR scores. The simulator detects and records birth positioning and treatments for post-simulation assessment and review.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists(1), quotes the fact that about 140 000 women worldwide die from post-partum hemorrhage each year - 1 woman every 4 minutes. The CAE Fidelis Maternal Fetal Simulator helps prepare healthcare professionals for these critical situations.

CAE Healthcare did the research and development for this simulator in Montreal and in partnership with world-renowned obstetricians.
