CAHPI Announces 2013 Update to the National Occupational Standard (NOS)

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Oct. 3, 2013) - The Canadian Association of Home & Property Inspectors - CAHPI -- are excited to announce the 2013 update to the National Occupational Standard (NOS) for Home & Property Inspectors. CAHPI supports over 1100 home inspectors all across Canada.

This document is the result of a one-year extensive review of the 2008 NOS by industry professionals. This update reflects current realities of the profession and provides additional guidance on performance standards, learning requirements and personal attributes leading to success in the home and property inspection industry. This revision represents the third edition of the standard, first published in 2001.

The occupational standard describes the skill, knowledge and abilities required to perform the duties as a professional home & property inspector, and forms the basis for training, curriculum development, accreditation of training programs, recruitment; performance improvement; and the certification of practitioners.

In British Columbia licensing of home and property inspectors became mandatory in 2009. This regulation is currently being reviewed by the BC Government following important concerns brought forward by CAHPI(BC). This National Occupational Standard can assist the Government in its role to study the regulation and competency of inspectors in BC. It is imperative that we work to close loopholes that allow insufficiently trained inspectors to conduct home inspections, and to raise standards to ensure every home buyer gets a comprehensive and accurate home inspection from this industry.
