Caillou Turns 25! The World's Most Beloved Preschooler Hits a New Milestone

MIAMI, FL--(Marketwired - Aug 26, 2015) - Caillou's publisher, Chouette Publishing, has announced that the beloved four-year-old, whose adventures accompany children across the world through books, TV shows, toys and more, is turning 25. The celebrations include the Can do with Caillou campaign and the release of Storybook Treasury: Ten Bestselling Stories (25th Anniversary Edition), already in stores.

Introduced to the world in 1990 by Canadian author Christine L'Heureux, Caillou has become a cultural icon due to his timeless ability to relate to audiences and his resemblance to the way children behave in real life. Her inspiration came from French psychoanalyst Dr. Françoise Dolto, who believed children needed a rational understanding of the world.

Caillou's popularity around the globe is non-debatable. The adventurous character has starred in over 200 books, published in 50 countries and 20 languages, totaling sales of over 15 million copies. The TV series, which premiered in 1997, ranks #1 in Sprout and Caillou's APP ranks #1 in the 'apps for kids' category in 55 countries.

Some of the best-selling titles in Caillou's 25-year book history include Potty Time, Caillou Puts Away his Toys, and My Bedtime Box Set. "In 'book years,' 25 is an impressive age," said Caillou's publisher, Anne Paradis. "It is a great accomplishment to continue to be fresh and vital in an industry that constantly searches for something new. But Caillou still speaks to the heart of childhood and touches the very young as it has done from the very beginning," she concluded.

As for fun facts, Caillou's name comes from the French translation of the word "pebble" (which were used as payment by children visiting Dr. Dolto). As for his head, he was originally conceptualized as a nine-month-old baby. When it was time for him to grow, it was agreed he would keep his looks so audiences could still identify him, also showing that having 'unusual' looks is perfectly fine.
