Calgary-Born Operation Eyesight Named One of the Top 25 Charities in Canada

CALGARY, AB--(Marketwired - December 16, 2015) - Calgary-based Operation Eyesight is proud to be named one of the Financial Post's "Charities of the Year" for 2015. The Financial Post recently released its "Charities of the Year" report card, listing Operation Eyesight as one of the top 25 Canadian charities measuring up to the highest standards of accountability, transparency and efficiency.

"This is an incredible honour for Operation Eyesight," says Executive Director Brian Foster. "We're proud of the great strides we've made in our work to eliminate avoidable blindness, and we have our amazing donors and staff to thank for making this all possible."

Operation Eyesight has come a long way since it first started operating out of the basement of a Calgary church in 1963. Today, it is an international development organization working to prevent blindness and restore sight in India and the African countries of Kenya, Ghana and Zambia. Canadian donors support a variety of Operation Eyesight projects, including school eye screening programs, training for local community health workers, water well projects, support programs for Operation Eyesight's partner hospitals and vision centres, and, most recently, the Operation Eyesight Universal Institute for Eye Cancer in Hyderabad, India.

"Operation Eyesight truly has an impact in the communities where we work," says Foster. "By saving someone's eyesight, not only do we change the life of the individual, we transform their entire community."

The World Health Organization estimates that 285 million people in the world are blind or have low vision. Eighty percent of cases can be treated or prevented. Operation Eyesight focuses on finding sustainable solutions to address specific eye health problems as well as the root causes of blindness, and it has been recognized as a leader in the eye health community for doing so. Operation Eyesight has successfully eliminated avoidable blindness in many communities, thanks to long-term support from Canadian donors.

"On behalf of all of us at Operation Eyesight, I'd like to thank Canadians for over 52 years of support," says Foster. "We know this year has been financially difficult for many families, and we're grateful that our donors continue to give back in whatever way they can. And we hope the Financial Post's report card has shown all of Canada just how much of a difference Operation Eyesight can make, with their support."
