Calgary Boys U17 Soccer Team Takes Trip of a Lifetime

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(CCNMatthews - July 28, 2005) - NorthStar Strikers Boys U17 team is currently playing their final game of the Dana Cup tournament in Hjorring, Denmark against the Mexico Nexaca BU17 team. This game will decide if the Strikers advance to the finals of this 6 day tournament. Whether the boys win or lose, the trip the Dana Cup is a dream come true for coach Kris Nielsen, himself a native of Denmark. Kris has dreamed for many years of taking a NorthStar team back home to play in this prestigious tournament. The dream took shape with the players and parents of the U16 team who played the 2005/05 indoor season with Calgary Minor Soccer Association. All of the team members have played on teams coached by Kris Nielsen at NorthStar Soccer and previously Dalhousie Soccer; many since U7.

Upon arrival in Denmark, the Strikers played several exhibition games arranged by the Bramming Soccer Club, Kris Nielsen's home club in Denmark. The Strikers have found the caliber of play to be high, and have raised the level of their own play with each game. According to one of the Striker's chaperones, the European teams play a more physical game than the boys are used to in Calgary and many teams are adept at playing an effective air game.

The Dana Cup is the third largest tournament in Europe, hosting 770 teams from 37 countries, playing on 55 fields in the area surrounding Hjorring. The NorthStar Strikers are the lone boys team representing Canada. Despite achieving only one victory in the tournament, the Strikers were competitive in all of their games. Coach Kris is proud of the improvement shown by the Strikers team in Denmark and the team's ability to learn from their opposition.

NorthStar Soccer is the blending of the Dalhousie and Varsity Communities city league soccer programs run through Calgary Minor Soccer Association. NorthStar Program offers Outdoor U10 to U18 age groups and Indoor U6 to U18 age groups. The current outdoor season has 390 players participating on 27 teams.

The Strikers team is the first U18 team for NorthStar Soccer, and is one of only a couple community based U18 teams participating in CMSA. They placed first in their outdoor league play and subsequently forfeited their position in Provincial Championships to travel to Denmark.

After spending several days unwinding at the coastal area of Djusrsland, the NorthStar Strikers will return home on August 3.

NorthStar Strikers arrive on Air Canada #845 from Frankfurt at 3:45 pm August 3.
