Calgary Folk Music Festival Announces Sneak-A-Peek Week Events

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - July 23, 2012) - The Calgary Folk Music Festival (CFMF) is very pleased to announce a week-long schedule of special events that are being presented prior to the annual Calgary Folk Music Festival, which runs July 26-29, 2012 on Calgary's idyllic Prince's Island Park.

The special event programming will feature intimate live performances and question/answer sessions by several artists who will appear on stage throughout the festival.

From July 24 to 26 at 1:30 pm at the National Music Centre (NMC), located at 134-11 Ave SE, the University of Calgary's campus and community radio station, CJSW 90.9 FM, will be broadcasting live from the Calgary Folk Festival Bootcamp Sessions. The live broadcasts are open to the public, and admission is free.

On Tuesday, July 24 the band Whitehorse, featuring Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland, will be performing songs from their upcoming album "The Fate of the World Depends on the Kiss".

On Wednesday, July 25, Jon Langford, from the legendary punk band The Mekons, will be performing live from the NMC and on Thursday, July 26 Canadian blues artist Shakura S'Aida will present a sneak-peak of her Saturday night festival main stage performance.

In addition to these performances, the CFMF is proud to present a special screening of the film "Searching for the Wrong Eyed Jesus" on Wednesday July 25 at the Plaza Theatre, located at 1133 Kensington Rd NW Calgary, AB.

Presented with support from the Calgary Independent Film Festival, this film is a captivating and compelling road trip through the American South. Director Andrew Douglas's film follows CFMF artist, alt country singer Jim White, through a gritty terrain of churches, prisons, truck stops, biker bars and coal mines. Along the way are roadside encounters with present-day musical mavericks including The Handsome Family, Johnny Dowd, 16 Horsepower and David Johansen. Narrator and festival artist Jim White will be in attendance for an acoustic performance and Question and Answer session following the screening. Doors open at 8 pm and the screening begins at 9:00 pm

Jon Langford - a 7" Retrospective running June 22 - July 28 The New Gallery @ Art Central

Widely recognized for his role in the indefatigable punk band the Mekons since its origin in 1977 at art school in Leeds, UK, Langford's reputation as a painter/printmaker has developed more recently. The suite of mixed-media prints which premieres at TNG this summer is a retrospective survey of many of the significant motifs and characters that have populated Langford's potent visual art for the past twenty-five years. Skeletal guitarists, blindfolded cowboys, and the omnipresent eye of Hank Williams are all here; the sullied and scratched up depictions of western heroes that initially kick started Langford's studio practice. Jon Langford will be performing at the 2012 Calgary Folk Music Festival.
