Calgary Food Bank: 25th Annual CBC Suncor Energy Food Bank Drive Launched

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Dec. 1, 2010) - Today the CBC Suncor Energy Food Bank Drive kicked off its 25th annual campaign with a $50,000 donation from Suncor Energy.

"At Suncor, we are very proud of our 25 year legacy of support to the Calgary Food Bank," says Eric Axford, Senior Vice President of Operations Support. "This campaign gives us a great opportunity to get behind an organization that is making a difference in the lives of those who need it most. Together with our campaign partners, we hope to work toward a Calgary without hunger."

The Food Bank Drive, co-sponsored by CBC Calgary and Suncor Energy, has raised almost $10 million for the Calgary Food Bank in the past 25 years. This year the campaign goal is $1 million.

"Back in 1985 when CBC decided to raise funds for the Calgary Food Bank, little did we realize that we'd still be doing so a quarter of a century later," says Diane Humber, Managing Director for CBC English Services in Calgary. "As Canada's national public broadcaster, CBC has the ability to provide support by reaching out and connecting those who can help with those in need of it. We are proud of our affiliation with the Calgary Food Bank, our partners and the continued efforts to create a hunger free Calgary."

Between December 1 and December 24, campaign events will be held around the city: Stuart McLean's Vinyl Cafe on December 2 and 3, the ever-popular Upscale Bake Sale on December 7, Fueltide 25/12 with the Heebee-jeebees on December 9, and Amble with Angus on December 17, to name just a few. Throughout the campaign, donations can be made daily at the CBC Broadcast Centre and Suncor Energy Centre, and from December 9 to 15 at Fifth Avenue Place.

"The Calgary Food Bank serves as a charitable food distribution hub," says James McAra, CEO of the Calgary Food Bank. "The generosity of Calgarians at this time of year through the CBC Suncor Energy Food Bank Drive allows us to feed individuals and share food with other service providers so they too can feed those in need."
