Calgary Food Bank: CP Holiday Train Improves the Odds of a Hunger-Free Christmas

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Dec. 11, 2010) - In a fabulous show of lights and music, the twelfth annual CP Holiday Train returned to Calgary this evening, collecting food and money for the Calgary Food Bank and raising awareness about hunger in our community and across our country.

The 14 rail cars of the Holiday Train are decorated with hundreds of thousands of festive lights. One of the cars has been turned into a traveling stage for performers. As the train rolled in and the rail car doors rolled open, Canadian rock band The Odds launched into their first song.

"I would do it every year if they would let me… We've really embraced it," said Odds' guitarist and lead vocalist Craig Northey. "The train is the star - it's unbelievable. You really have to get out and see this vintage CP train pull up to your town with the lights on… It's such a pure, good feeling when you come out and see the train."

The joyful evening, including The Odds' performance was free, but the Calgary Food Bank was on hand collecting non-perishable food and cash donations.

"Through the generosity of CP Rail and the many people across our country who support the event by greeting the train at each stop, the Holiday Train is truly able to achieve its mission of feeding communities across Canada," says James McAra, Calgary Food Bank CEO. "Last year, in Calgary alone more than $13,500 in food and funds was directed to the Calgary Food Bank through the CP Holiday Train."

New this year… the Holiday Train has inspired its first ever animated music video. MC Elfie takes time out from makin' toys to give you the noise! Check out MC Elfie and Santa on YouTube:

The Calgary Food Bank is a charitable food distribution hub. We provide quality emergency food directly to Calgarians to meet their individual needs (prenatal, homeless, households with children, etc). We also collect food donations for distribution to other charities (including campus food banks, the Mustard Seed, the Veteran's Food Bank, and the Community Kitchen Program of Calgary).
