Calgary Food Bank: Mixing It Up at the 21st Annual Mayor's Food Drive Kick Off!

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Nov. 24, 2009) - The aisles have been tidied, the Grey Cup has moved on to it's next stop and the staff of the Aspen Woods Safeway have recovered after hosting Friday's 21st Annual Mayor's Christmas Food Drive kick-off: the Grey Cup of Shopping Challenge! For those able to attend, the staff and volunteers of the Calgary Food Bank hope you had as much fun as we did.

The challenge started off with skill testing questions about the Calgary Food Bank and special bonus questions about the Grey Cup. Many teams used "creative" methods to get their answers as quickly as possible. Next teams raced through the aisles of Safeway, swinging their baskets wildly as they tried to find all the required non-perishable items needed to create an Emergency Food Hamper. It was in the final leg of the challenge that the teams really shined, coming up with creative cheers for the Calgary Stampeders and the Calgary Food Bank. All of the food collected by the teams was donated to the Calgary Food Bank by Safeway following the kick off.

Congratulations to the winners of the coveted "Golden Shopping Cart", The Calgary & District Dental Society and Mix 97.7; our runner-up the Calgary Board of Education and VIBE 98.5; and our second runner-up Mayor Bronconnier and the Sparks. It was a close race, and even tougher to judge all of your fantastic cheers. We wish to thank all the teams for being such great sports and playing so nicely with and against each other.

This year marks the 21st for the Annual Mayor's Christmas Food Drive. This longstanding partnership brings together organizations from the corporate & community sectors, all in support of the Calgary Food Bank. It's an example of the strength of our community when it comes together to take on a common goal, no matter the time of year or state of the economy. To date, over $6 million in cash and food donations have been raised as a result of this drive. Each organization is an important part in the efforts to build a strong and vibrant community, one in which no one should face hunger.

Our 2009 participating sponsor partners for the Mayor's Food Drive are:
City of Calgary Calgary Motor Dealers Association
Calgary Board of Education Calgary Catholic School Board
Calgary Area Girl Guides Calgary & District Dental Society
Safeway Calgary Real Estate Board News
Federation of Calgary Communities Emergency Paramedics Charity Society,
Calgary Catholic Separate School CUPE Local 38.

Food donations can be dropped off at any of our sponsor locations throughout the month of December. The Mayor's Food Drive donations total will be shared in mid-January.

On behalf of everyone at the Calgary Food Bank, especially our clients, thank you.
