Calgary Food Bank Receives ANOTHER Award!

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - May 2, 2011) -

We did it again!!

On Tuesday, April 26th, the Calgary Food Bank was presented with a finalist/honourable mention award for Alberta's Best Workplaces' Health & Safety Award. Our second award in as many months.

Alberta Venture's Alberta's Best Workplaces recognizes those Alberta-based companies leading the way in corporate culture and human resource development. A 'Best Workplace' company is one dedicated to building and sustaining a prosperous, forward-thinking organization that values its greatest asset – people. These leading organizations are able to attract and sustain quality employees in Calgary's high demand labour market.

"I could not be more proud to work for this incredible organization," says Valerie Smith, Manager of People and Organization Services at the Food Bank. "The Calgary Food Bank is so much more than good health and safety policies, programs and practices. It is the safety culture and consciousness of each employee and volunteer that really keeps all of us safe and healthy."

The Calgary Food Bank is a food distribution hub with a determined focus on work safety. We provide quality emergency food directly to Calgarians to meet their individual needs (prenatal, homeless, households with children, etc). We also collect food donations for distribution to other charities (including the Mustard Seed, the Community Kitchen Program of Calgary, the Salvation Army and women's shelters). Demand for Emergency Food Hampers has increased 57% since the start of the recession. Last year, more than 140,000 client visits were made to the Emergency Food Hamper Program, the majority of those helped continue to be the working poor. 41% of those fed are children.
