The Calgary Homeless Foundation (CHF) is asking Calgarians to buy a "Hope for Humanity" rose bush from Greengate Garden Centres this Victoria Day long weekend.

"Many Calgarians start planting their gardens on the May long weekend, which was named in honour of Queen Victoria, whose symbol is the rose," explained Tim Richter, CHF President and CEO. "This weekend, we're encouraging Calgarians to provide hope for neighbours currently experiencing or at risk of becoming homeless by buying a 'Hope for Humanity' rose bush at Greengate Garden Centres."

Since 2003, Greengate Garden Centres has been donating the proceeds from the sale of the "Hope for Humanity" rose to the CHF, raising more than $21,000 towards ending homeless in Calgary.

Peggy Telford, co-owner of the Greengate Garden Centres said, "Several years ago, we were approached by the Foundation to supply the "Hope for Humanity" rose as a symbol for their organization. At that time, we decided to donate the proceeds to the CHF. It seemed like a good idea, so we just kept doing it."

The "Hope for Humanity" rose is a hardy shrub, developed to survive Canadian winters, and the deep red roses will bloom and re-bloom throughout the summer. "You don't have to have a green thumb to plant them," Peggy explained. "These rose shrubs come with a one year guarantee, which applies if they are properly planted, fertilized, and watered."

Greengate Garden Centres is located at 14111 Macleod Trail South, Calgary and is open from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm, seven days a week.
