Calgary Homeless Foundation: Student-run Medical Clinic Brings Needed Services to Project Homeless Connect 14

Saturday, April 21, 2012

CALGARY, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - April 19, 2012) -

What: To date, approximately 10,000 people at risk of or experiencing homelessness have attended 13 previous Project Homeless Connect (PHC) events in Calgary.

For the first time, a University of Calgary student-run clinic will be collaborating with agencies to provide basic primary care and build therapeutic relationships with attendants, filling a significant, much sought-after service at PHC.

"We've had the opportunity to speak with many agencies and organizations and the support we've had has been fantastic," says Mike Weldon, one of the students organizing the clinic. "Medical students and faculty are really getting behind this as they see it as a great learning opportunity, both professionally and personally."

At PHC, those at risk of or experiencing homelessness in Calgary can access support from more than 45 agencies and service providers all in one location. This free event provides a number of services, including legal advice and help getting identification; mental health and addictions counselling; information on income support; employment counselling; housing information; a variety of medical services and more. Those attending can also receive free haircuts, comfort kits (toiletries, socks, mitts and toques), clothing and a nutritious, hot lunch.

Thanks to Vermilion Energy Inc. and the Co-operators Group Limited for generously sponsoring PHC14. In addition to their financial support, individuals from these companies will also be lending their time and energy to volunteer at the event.
