Re: Wearing of Hijab and Rule 4

Dear Fred Kern,

On November 24, 2007 a Chinook Phantoms Girls U16 Comp A player; CMSA Number 1000057792 was informed she could not play while wearing her Hijab by the referee. She refused to remove it and was asked to leave the field, which she eventually did. As you know, the press has taken this on and soccer is once again being cast in a poor light.

Calgary Minor Soccer Association does not feel that this rule is being applied consistently across the Province and in Canada and that the rule as it involves Hijab's should be reviewed. CMSA respectfully asks that Hijabs specifically be allowed as a documented exception in the rules.

Calgary Minor Soccer Association hereby requests the Alberta Soccer Association make a ruling on this issue immediately so that we may clearly deal with this and future Hijab situations.

Yours Truly,

Gary Steen

President, Calgary Minor Soccer Association
