MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Oct. 4, 2011) - In celebration of seniors month, Chartwell Seniors Housing hosted 50 regional Senior Star competitions featuring over 1000 contestants across Canada between June 8-21, 2011. Our celebrity judges Gordie Tapp, Tim Louis and Dan Clancy selected 9 Finalists from Western Canada and Ontario who will compete in the National Final in Niagara Falls on November 21, 2011:

  • Miriam Dreher – Calgary, AB
  • Maggie Viveen – Cambridge, ON
  • Florence Hansen – Cambridge, ON

  • Toni Pinto – Vaughan, ON
  • Paul Hariton – Cobourg, ON
  • Donald Brasseur – Burlington, ON
  • Sandra May Mandzuk – Windsor, ON
  • Gerald "Bud" Switzer – Newmarket, ON

The 10th contestant will be the winner of the Quebec Senior Star finals held on October 12th.

Miriam Dreher of Calgary, Alberta, entertained the crowd with a yodel at the regional Senior Star audition jointly hosted by Chartwell's Colonel Belcher, Royal Park, Harbours of Newport and Eau Claire retirement residences. Performing "He Taught Me How to Yodel," Mrs. Dreher has been yodeling since early childhood, learning the talent from her grandfather who originated from Switzerland.

In 2007, Calgary singer Hazel Proctor won Chartwell's 1st Senior Star.

"Now in its 5th year, Senior Star has grown to be the largest celebration of seniors' talent in Canada," said Brent Binions, President and CEO of Chartwell Seniors Housing REIT. "When you witness the performances of these participants, you realize how much incredible senior talent exists across Canada and how eager they are to share their gift."

This year's Final, hosted again by the talented Dinah Christie, has moved to a new location at the Fallsview Theatre in the Scotiabank Convention Centre, in Niagara Falls.

"Our performers shatter traditional misconceptions about slowing down in ones' later years," said Phil McKenzie, Executive Vice President, Marketing and Public Relations. "The 'unsung heroes' of these competitions are the hundreds of Chartwell staff members who put their heart, soul and an incredible amount of time into the success of these events and I extend a sincere thank you to each of them. Our employees are truly the best ambassadors of our commitment at Chartwell to honour and celebrate seniors."
