"Calli" the Kitten Is Canada's 100,000th Pet Adopted

Milestone Number of Lives Saved Through PetSmart Charities® of Canada Adoptions

PHOENIX, AZ--(Marketwire - December 14, 2009) - A five-month-old kitten named Calli in Thornton, Ontario has found her forever home, thanks to Street Cats Animal Rescue and PetSmart Charities of Canada. But Calli is no ordinary kitten. She represents the 100,000th pet adopted in Canada from a PetSmart Charities of Canada Adoption Center.

Calli was adopted by the Wiggins family, who visited the Barrie PetSmart® store to buy supplies for their three other pets, a cat named Mandy, a Chinchilla named Chinn and a rescued boxer-terrier mix named Bree. "We weren't sure we were ready for another cat," said Vivian Wiggins. "In September, we lost our beloved 17-year old cat Sasha, and we knew that Mandy missed having a feline companion. When we saw Calli in the adoption display, we knew she was the one for us."

The Street Cats Animal Rescue saved Calli from the local SPCA, and after spending a brief time in their care, Calli was ready to go to her forever home. "She won my husband Bill over immediately," continued Vivian. "We knew that she would be a great addition to our family." The Wiggins children, Robert, Matthew, Darryl and Kara, were excited to have a new kitten in the family.

Already, Calli has made herself at home with the Wiggins family, sleeping with 11-year-old Kara every night and acting as a mediator between Mandy and Bree.

"We are so excited to have reached this amazing milestone in Canada," said PetSmart Charities Executive Director Susana Della Maddalena. "With the support of PetSmart and a partnership with more than 125 animal-welfare organizations, shelters and rescue groups in Canada, we are closer than ever to ending the tragedy of euthanasia."

Every year, more than 400,000 pets in Canada must be put down because they don't have homes. PetSmart Charities of Canada is the largest funder of animal-welfare efforts in North America and strives to create and support programs that save the lives of homeless pets.

On December 17, the Wiggins family, including Calli, will celebrate the 100,000th adoption at the PetSmart® store where she was adopted. The celebration will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the PetSmart® store located at 33 Mapleview Drive East in Barrie, Ontario. Media is invited to attend.
