Being a parent to a newborn baby creates challenges for any family, but this major life change can be even more stressful when that newborn requires intensive care. For that reason, Sunnybrook has created this employment opportunity.

The new and innovative position is a prime example of how the new Women & Babies facility has been designed as the most family friendly birthing centre in the country. This role has been developed in collaboration with the Family Advisory Committee .

The NICU Parent Coordinator will act as a liaison between staff and parents whose baby is in Sunnybrook's NICU. This special mom or dad will also be the parent of a graduate from the NICU at Sunnybrook. The Parent Coordinator will use his or her own experience to help parents become active members of the health care team. More information about the Parent Coordinator position can be found online at http://sunnybrook.ca/employment.

The Parent Coordinator will work at Sunnybrook's Bayview campus, the new home for its Women & Babies program as of September 12, 2010. "Parents who have had a child in the NICU understand the challenges, and what parents need," says Marion Deland, Patient Care Manager at Sunnybrook's NICU, "In addition to the tremendous care provided by Sunnybrook's health care team, we hope hiring a mom or dad will help new parents feel even more comfortable in their journey." The NICU at Sunnybrook will have the capacity for 41 babies and will provide around-the-clock care for a projected 1,200 babies a year.

The new home for the Women & Babies Program, opening on Sunday, September 12th, will encompass 120,000 square feet over two new floors at the Bayview campus. Designed with input from women and their families, as well as their care providers, the new facility is peaceful, warm, and family-friendly. These new facilities will provide a state-of-the-art environment for Sunnybrook's world-class Women & Babies team.
