Caltrain Uses Acrow Bridge Steel Structures During Replacement of Pedestrian Walkways in San Francisco

Temporary Bridging Provides Safe, Reliable Passage Around Train Tracks

PARSIPPANY, NJ--(Marketwired - Feb 11, 2016) -  Acrow Bridge, a leading international bridge engineering and supply company, provided Caltrain, the widely used commuter rail line linking San Francisco's SOMA district to the Peninsula and on to the Silicon Valley, with two modular steel pedestrian bridges for temporary use during the demolition and replacement of three structurally deficient bridges built circa 1901. The temporary structures carry both utilities and pedestrian traffic safely over the rail tracks and below Interstate 80, and are expected to be in place during the construction, currently expected to run through November 2016.

The rented bridges are used being used in a dense urban area, and are critical to both commuters and contractor methodology. Because the construction on the bridges is sequenced, two Acrow structures were selected so that one can be reused in a second location. A 110' by 5' bridge is being used during work on both the 22nd and 23rd Street bridges, and a 90' by 5' bridge is being used over Paul Avenue.

In addition to providing the bridge components, Acrow served as design engineer (along with Foothills Bridge, which provided the same service for the foundations). The contractor is Disney Construction.

"This proved to be a very difficult design due to seismic requirements of the area and the worst case scenarios applied to the bridge loading," said Jack Arizcuren, Pacific States Sales Manager at Acrow. "Additionally, portal frames enhanced the ends of the superstructure, increasing strength and stability."

Bill Killeen, President and CEO of Acrow Bridge, added, "As this installation demonstrates, Acrow modular detour bridges provide a safe and reliable right of way for pedestrians in construction zones. As temporary bridges that can be rented or purchased, they are an increasingly popular choice for state DOTs and contractors needing to stay on or ahead of schedule and control costs."
