The State-run newspaper, China Daily, says that China could resume the approval process for new nuclear power projects by mid-2012. China had halted approvals of new nuclear projects on March 16, days after Japan's nuclear complex triggered radiation worries worldwide.

China is building about 28 reactors, roughly 40 percent of the global total under construction, as the central government boosted approvals in the past two years.

The vice-president of the China Nuclear Energy Association, Zhao Chengkun, stressed that nuclear is the only energy source that can be used on a mass scale to achieve the nation's goal of developing cleaner, low carbon energy. Ux Consulting (UxC) forecasts say that China is in the process quadrupling its uranium consumption up to 50 to 60 million pounds a year.
