Camp Caribou Marks 45 Years With Lerman Family

Three Generations Make Summer Camp the Quintessential Family-Owned Business Success Story

WAYLAND, MA and WINSLOW, ME--(Marketwired - May 14, 2013) -  Camp Caribou, a 92-year-old boys residential summer camp in Winslow, Maine, is celebrating 45 years of Lerman family ownership and management. Camp Caribou is an example of a successful New England family-owned business. The third generation continues to build its enduring legacy, having grown from 90 campers in the 1960s to nearly 250 campers today.

Al and Evelyn Lerman purchased Camp Caribou in 1968. Today, their son Bill and his wife Martha are owners and operators. Their elder son Bobby and daughter Lori along with her husband Alex Rotman are Assistant Directors. Younger son Jerry serves as Assistant Program Director.

"A rich summer camp experience is built on unique traditions and history," said Bill. "The connections between our family and generations of campers are part of why Caribou holds a unique place in the hearts of so many. Our children bring fresh perspective while maintaining the Caribou history and culture."

Summer Camps are Changing
New England summer camps have undergone many changes during the Lerman's 45-year tenure. In the 1970s there were more than 400 Maine camps. Today fewer than half remain. Multi-camp corporations and national non-profits have acquired many independently owned camps. Meanwhile, Camp Caribou has endured and grown to include campers from around the US and world.

"Families still see our traditional camp as valuable in building life skills and independence," commented Martha.
