Camp Sherman Oregon Hosts Upcoming Woodpecker Festival

CAMP SHERMAN, OR--(Marketwire - May 9, 2008) - Metolius Recreation Association and Paradise Birding today announced an invitation to the public to the first annual Woodpecker Wonderland Festival, to be held Friday June 6 through Sunday June 8, in Camp Sherman, Oregon. Field trips, workshops, food, beverages, and live music will highlight this weekend of entertainment in Central Oregon's Cascade Mountains.

The Central Oregon Cascades host eleven species of nesting woodpeckers, one of the highest densities in North America -- including the highly sought-after Black-backed, Three-toed, and White-headed Woodpeckers -- and this event is timed for the peak of courtship and the onset of nesting season. At the heart of the region, the Camp Sherman area is a well-known birding hot-spot, showcasing panoramic mountain views and over 100 nesting bird species.

On Saturday evening, the event will feature keynote speaker Nancy Tanner sharing her experiences from the 1940s observing the behaviors of Ivory-billed Woodpeckers among the Louisiana bayous. Field Trips will explore recently burned areas of the Deschutes National Forest as well as some of the most productive wetland habitats east of the Cascades Crest.

Registration is now being accepted for the Woodpecker Wonderland Festival. Space is available on a first-come-first-served basis for all events. The complete registration packet and details about the festival can be found at

Event sponsors include Metolius Recreation Association, Paradise Birding, Sisters Ranger District-Deschutes National Forest, and The Metolian Resort. For additional questions, call project coordinator Steve Shunk of Paradise Birding at 541-408-1753.
