Canada Allocates $192 Million to the UN's Central Emergency Response Fund

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Dec. 13, 2007) - The Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of International Cooperation, today announced a historic investment to the United Nations' Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) to help ensure there are funds available to quickly respond to humanitarian emergencies around the world.

The investment is $192 million over five years, which is Canada's largest investment to date.

"I am pleased that Canada is always there when it's time to respond to humanitarian emergencies abroad such as floods, hurricanes, and earthquakes," said Minister Oda. "We are investing more than ever before to ensure that people affected by these situations can get the help they need quickly and efficiently."

The CERF is designed to disburse money to humanitarian organizations for on-the-ground response to areas affected by crises such as floods, hurricanes, and earthquakes. Canada is the fifth largest contributor to the CERF, and among few major donors making a multi-year commitment. The contribution announced today is in addition to other Canadian humanitarian initiatives and reflects the Government of Canada's conviction to deliver immediate support to people affected by crises.

The contribution made today builds on Canada's initial $24.4 million grant to the CERF in May 2006. As an original contributor, Canada helped shape the CERF, and is currently a member of an advisory group created to ensure that it is performing effectively and efficiently.

Through contributions made by Canada and the donor community since its establishment in March 2006, CERF interventions have helped alleviate human suffering in 57 countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan and Afghanistan.
