Canada And Newfoundland and Labrador Create Jobs Through Investments in Rural Infrastructure

ST. JOHN'S, NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR--(Marketwire - May 14, 2009) - The Honourable Fabian Manning, Senator, along with the Honourable Dianne Whalen, Minister of Municipal Affairs for Newfoundland and Labrador, announced today that federal, provincial and municipal governments have joined forces to help communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador meet their infrastructure needs, with more than $192 million combined investment in 71 community infrastructure projects.

"Under the leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, our Government is making investments in Newfoundland and Labrador that will create jobs in communities during these tough economic times," said Senator Manning. "These important projects will improve our quality of life, as well as help to boost our regional economy now and for years to come."

"Sound municipal infrastructure is the foundation that strong communities are built upon," said Minister Whalen. "The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador recognizes the importance of infrastructure investment to economic growth and job creation. That is why we have increased our annual commitment to municipal infrastructure funding by 69% last year and it is also the reason we implemented new cost sharing ratios to ensure municipalities could access critical infrastructure funding."

"Now is the time to reinvest in the infrastructure that will encourage economic development and create jobs," said Graham Letto, President of Municipalities Newfoundland & Labrador. "Identifying municipal priorities in rural areas and providing more money for municipal infrastructure will provide major stimulus to communities struggling to provide basic services."

All across Newfoundland and Labrador, the federal and provincial governments are investing in important municipal infrastructure projects. The federal government will contribute approximately $63.7 million and the provincial government approximately $90.2 million. Added to the municipal contributions of more than $38.2 million, today's announcement outlines total expenditures of approximately $192.2 million.

The Government of Canada's 2009 Economic Action Plan is accelerating and expanding the existing federal investment of $33 billion in infrastructure with almost $12 billion in new infrastructure stimulus funding over two years.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador increased infrastructure spending to approximately $800 million in Budget 2009 and in excess of $4 billion over the next several years.
