Canada and Ontario Invest in Ottawa Good Companions Centre

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Jan. 29, 2010) - Canada and Ontario today announced an investment in partnership with The Good Companions for significant building upgrades to their downtown centre on Albert Street. The $514,000 announcement was made by the Honourable John Baird, Canada's Transport and Infrastructure Minister and the Member of Parliament for Ottawa West-Nepean, and Yasir Naqvi, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Revenue and Member of Provincial Parliament for Ottawa Centre.

Minister Baird and MPP Naqvi were pleased to be joined by Rock Falardeau, Chair of the Board of Directors of The Good Companions.

"Since 1955, the Good Companions have provided important community help and resources to many communities, including Ottawa's seniors," said Minister Baird. "Our Government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, is pleased to partner in this project that will make building access easier for clients and allow for more community space."

"This investment is about more than building facilities and creating jobs," said MPP Naqvi. "This investment means that seniors and disabled persons in our community will continue to have the Good Companions Centre, a welcoming place, where they can go to for health care, social services and friendship. This investment is about supporting the seniors who worked so hard to build our city."

"On behalf of The Good Companions, I would like to express my sincere thanks to all of you," said Louise Martin, Executive Director of the Good Companions Centre. "It is very rewarding to be valued as an important player in providing key programs and services to seniors and adults with physical disabilities in Ottawa. Un gros merci."

"On behalf of the Board of Directors of The Good Companions, I would like to express our gratitude for the new funding as it will have a tremendous impact on our ability to provide quality programs and services in our community and help us achieve our long term goals," said Rock Falardeau, Chair of the Board of Directors of The Good Companions.

The Good Companions provide a broad range of community development, social and community-based health services to women, seniors, and immigrants in Ottawa. In addition, the Good Companions houses partner agencies and allied professionals who use the Good Companions as a base for service delivery, including Meals on Wheels.

Today's announcement will enhance building accessibility features and improve the overall functionality of the existing facility. The total eligible project cost is $771,000.

The Governments of Canada and Ontario and the Good Companions are each investing one-third of the total project cost. Canada's funding is part of its national Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, under Canada's Economic Action Plan. Ontario's matching contribution is provided through the 2009 Ontario Budget - Confronting the Challenge: Building Our Economic Future.

Canada and Ontario are working together to create jobs and boost the economy, while making significant investments that help communities improve their infrastructure.
